Forum Information

Dear users, I have decided to phase out the posting on the forums on this website and move any discussions over to this private facebook group. While the forums were great 10 years ago, they are now difficult to maintain due to constant spam. I spend most of my time just cleaning them up, rather than interacting. This, combined with finding it difficult to directly communicate with other users through several different social media platforms, I have decided to consolodate it all to one group where people can chat with me, ask questions and jibber jabber with other users on a regular basis. I will not make the forums offline as there is a wealth of content, but posting has now been disabled. Thanks to all those who have contributed over the years, and I'll see you over on the Facebook group! -Tom

Window 10 Update - Audio Issues

Haven't posted much of late. Really busy. But I did see this and I have had an issue as well with my focusrite scarlett 8i6. The sound started playing REALLY slow and then one day I couldn't even play a test tone. Windows 10 has introduced new ways that they are handling audio. I believe that this is what is causing the issue ultimately but to resolve it with mine I uninstalled all the drivers and then deleted all folders that the drivers left in personal settings and such. Unplugged the device. Reinstalled the drivers as admin (right click and choose run as admin). Restart. Plugged in the device when everything came back up. It now works. Now this DID take me a day or 2 so it's possible that in that time it was actually a problem with microsoft and they fixed it while I was working on it. Then reinstalling would have meant nothing. But there you have it. Hope you get it fixed soon. Windows 10 really is good they just need to work through the initial bug fixes. Good luck.

    Red Book Audio Software

Not sure if any of the burners on ninite would help. They're all free so you can always try them. Ninite is basically my go to when it comes to windows free software. They allow you to click what you want to install and give you one installer that has all those annoying "would you like this toolbar or antivirus" options removed. As a computer tech it's worth it's weight in gold. Check it out. It's pretty slick.

    Song Structure

I agree with Karl. This has been one of my biggest issues in writing electronic music but especially with trance. No idea why. When I write downtempo and ambient I don't have the same issue. Another thing you can do to go along with what Karl is saying that also helps if you're looking for visual ques is to use an energy map. Basically insert a blank midi track and then create a blank midi clip that runs the entire length of the track. Open up an automation lane using the "+" symbol on any parameter. Use the automation line to draw in how you want the energy in the track to flow with the highest energy being the highest value allowed in your automation. Zero energy would be the lowest (so basically no sound happening or maybe just a tail of something trailing off). Pick a pro track and map out the energy flow from beginning to end. I have found that this has helped me a few times. Has even helped more in some cases than identifying the individual pieces. Both things though are very helpful. If you want to you can even split up the midi track in your energy flow to break up the different sections. To kinda show what goes where similar to the track markers Karl was recommending. I like doing it the way he mentioned because then you can quick skip between pieces of the track.

Long story short....this is still something that gets me......when it comes to making ideas and creating effects and making synth patches and mixing and mastering.....no problem. I may not get them perfect but I can typically get close to what I want. But I seriously dread the arrangement part of it and I'm trying to get past that I just don't know how yet. I haven't even felt like writing anything recently as the result. I'll let you know if I come up with anything. Best of luck though and I hope this helps.

    K37 - Via Vobis

Sounded good Karl. Lots of good imagery. Mix sounded good. There were a few elements throughout that I was thinking the release time was a bit short but that was really a minor thing so I won't go into it. Nice track. :cheer:

    Being an electronic music producer

Nonsense wakes up the brain cells. And it helps develop a sense of humor, which is awfully important in this day and age. Humor has a tremendous place in this sordid world. It’s more than just a matter of laughing. If you can see things out of whack, then you can see how things can be in whack. - Dr Seuss

    it has been a while...!

I can definitely hear what jemeneye was saying yet I also think that this could also be just fine being the floaty chilled piece that it is. I usually don't like DnB style beats in tracks but this actually worked quite well. Some nice punchy sounds in there to contrast the almost harpish arp that you had going on. Mix sounded pretty good too. Nicely done.

    Tech House and Techno Mix

I guess relevant or not is dependent on what the intent is behind doing the the mix in the first place. If I go by that definition I've been posting irrelevant music for quite a while now. I guess I'm alright with that. ;)

Honestly feyra considering this is your first recorded set that you've posted (that I've seen anyway) I'd say it's pretty good. If your intent was to compete with the pros with this particular set then I'd say the thing to take away from what Berni was saying is that you need to polish it a bit yet to get all your tracks sounding consistent. But I wasn't understanding that this was meant to be a pro release I guess. So for what it was I liked the track selection and I didn't hear any real transition problems so honestly i think it's a good place to start. Nice job.

New experimental track 'and so to sleep'

Sorry to hear about your health man. Hope you get better soon. I had never thought about writing music to help me sleep or meditate......seriously never occurred to me.

This is honestly an excellent use of your music skills man. Sometimes I put myself in a box and define what I can or can't write or do with my music. It's nice to get a little wake up here and there.....well in one sense but I didn't wake up with the tune itself. ;)

Very nice track with nice drawn out chords making it really relaxing. Couldn't listen to it much at work here. I found myself just staring...........

Yeah I listen to relaxation cds when I sleep. Otherwise my brain is too active and I find that I can't. I have to focus on something. this does nicely. If I had to make adjustments I think I would give all the instruments longer attack times or use a volume envelope to bring the ideas in and out. Some were a bit abrupt. There were a couple elements I'd bring back in the mix as well. Some of the pads/drones seemed out of balance volume wise and with stuff like this for my own purposes I'd want one to flow into the next so as not to break the flow. Seriously nice meditative feel though and again I hope you get better.

    MrMorphz - High Jack3d

Hey man. Nice work on the track. Liked the feel of it. The mix felt pretty good all in all. Everything seemed to hit in smaller speakers just fine. The only thing I wasn't a big fan of was it seemed like you started your track over about 2/3 the way through and developed it back up in almost the same way as the first time. Or maybe it just felt really similar. Not sure. Either way I'd change it up a bit after you break there unless starting over was something you wanted to do for an effect of some sort. Nice job on the track.
