I've been wondering... can you make dummy track with the main melody that feeds the note sequence to a group of instruments, and depending at what time intervals the midi notes are placed for the separate instruments have them follow that melody?

What I want to do is have a recurring bass melody and basically improvise which part of the melody is being played by what.

This way i could find rhythm sequences for the melody that go well with the kick and snare sequence, improvise their distribution across the instruments and then use some of them again for a different melody...
I hope I'm making myself clear lol.
